Mare And Foal Scrolled Fretwork

I finally got some Birch Plywood. Here is my first attempt at some fretwork with my scroll saw. This is another art medium I'm teaching myself.

I have 2 more to scroll. I will figure out some kind of unique and different frame for them.

I've had this scroll saw for 3 years and only cut out letters and plaques with it, so I'm now using it fully.

Snow is begging to melt, maybe this week I'll be to go to the saw mill for sign wood.

Hi Elizabeth.

Well, tomorrow, I'll be making some frames for these scrolled pieces. I have a few ideas in my crazy head and we'll see where this goes. I want them to be different and unique from others.

You won't believe what I did. My husband brought a pine cone into the house, it opened up while sitting on my kitchen counter. I saw it, and cut all the pieces off. I'm thinking of attaching the pieces to a frame. I never saw anything like that before, so we will find out how different it looks. I may need more pine cones, but I have plenty in my yard.

Never know what kind of ideas come into my head, and can't explain why. I go with what ever seems different.

Karen, it's a gift we as artists, have! We are blessed with ideas and many of us
get a hundred a day, lol. Just like writing or playing a musical instrument - I think
it's also a process of loving what you do which makes one's mind especially sensitive
and receptive to all kind of artistic thought. It is also a blessing to be able to sift
through all the ideas and decide what will work - Ha!
Pine cones a fabuloso idea and I cannot wait to see. E

Elizabeth, I'm glad others get ideas into the brain like me, at least I'm not alone with out-of-the-box thinking. I applied the pine cone parts on the edge, and set it aside for a few days. Well, finally decided I didn't like it. I removed that idea, and then hand carved a frame to look like wood sticks. I went with that.

I attached some imitation leather to the edge of the mare and foul scrolled work with upholstery tacks. Here are pictures of the final framed pieces.

Each can be placed in a stand or hung on a wall.

Karen, I never question your work or
choice of frame. These look perfectly lovely as they are!
I do have one tiny lil' suggestion - what do you think about some
strategically placed varnish behind the animal's heads or through them
just to get a bit more darkness/depth here and there? Thanks, E

I called these completed, but will be starting another today. I will take your advise by burning a light halo around the subject to see how that looks. Thank you for the suggestion, it should add a little something to it.

oh sweet, just looked, i like the horse head one. is it hard to do? i've always wanted to try my hand at it. i want to do some on skateboards.

If you can sketch you can wood burn. Most people start out with the inexpensive soldering iron sets found in the craft sections of your local store. Give it a try, I always try new mediums.
