Tiger step by steps - oil on canvas - new member :)

Hi I'm new to the forum, so thought it might me useful to show how I work

Here's a few step by steps hopefully someone might find it of use.

This tiger although a portrait is actually a bit different from the norm, there will be extreme contrast and colours between the two sides of the face - similar in many ways to a lion I did a couple of years ago-

The painting is oil on canvas.

The 1st image shows the basic sketch - he looks kind of lopsided with the 1 eye here.



The 2nd image shows that I have covered the canvas with an acrylic - burnt sienna wash, then wiped out the highlights with some tissue



The 3rd image shows me starting to define the form a bit with just standard acrylic paints, the black is made from ultra blue and burnt umber

I usually work with the oils after just the initial wash of burnt sienna, but for this painting I wanted to continue with the acrylics until I had a good solid base to build upon.

So here's the end of the acrylic stage - I guess from pencil drawing to final acrylic block in was about 3 hrs

Here he is - 99.0% done now.

All I have left to do is to add some blue shadow to some of the whiskers on the shadow side of the face and he is done - hope you all like him

May I ask a seemingly stupid question from someone struggling to learn all she can?
What
and/type canvas do you prefer? What is the texture like or maybe post a link to where it is available?
There are so many
ands, types, textures of canvas out there and I want to see what others are preferring.

I don't use anything special. A fine grain one, sometimes called portrait canvas is what I prefer, but you can get a similar effect by coating regular primed canvas with gesso, then when dry give it a light sanding over with sandpaper / glass paper

I have always wanted to understand just how to layer to get the end result you have here. This was a wonderful tutorial and I really appreciate you sharing. You are a very good teacher and an accomplished artist. I learned more here than I did during several weeks in my college course. Thankyou again!
