Looking for collaboration on a female superhero comic

Postby happycrackers » Sat Feb 29, 2020 2:59 am

OUR PROJECT
As a comic-based project by the China Women’s Film Festival (CWFF), our aim is to create a series of original female superhero characters, to act as a source of inspiration for comic book readers. The story takes place in a parallel universe: set in 1936 of Beijing, China. Here, our protagonist encounters several issues relevant to today, such as pollution, labor exploitation and gender inequality. By emphasizing the idea of equality and empowerment, our project has the potential to create a lasting international movement, for the next generation of readers.

YOUR MISSION
You will have an active role in the development of the comic. This includes:
* Character design
* Story development
* World-building
* … and much more
The process involves a close collaboration with us, to ensure that the comic aligns with our vision. Professional experience with illustrations and comic drawing is preferred, but not a requirement.

OPPORTUNITIES / INCENTIVES
Participating in his project is of a voluntary nature, and therefore no monetary compensation is offered. However, we offer other opportunities and benefits to our illustrators. The CWFF will provide the five best applicants with three options to choose from:

First, we offer the opportunity to represent the CWFF at art exhibitions and festivals around the world, included but not limited to the International Comics Festival in Angoulême, and the Linz exhibition in Austria. If chosen, you will be given the opportunity to display your work through these platforms, thereby gaining international recognition and meeting many big names in comic drawing and illustration.

Second, you will be given the chance to represent the CWFF at international women’s conferences. At these, you can engage in inspirational discussions and listen to speeches by many influential women from a variety of educational and professional backgrounds.

Finally, we can sponsor a round-trip to our headquarters in Beijing. This gives you the chance to engage firsthand in discussion with young comic artists and illustrators about our project, as well as the opportunity to explore local Chinese culture. All travel-expenses will be covered by the CWFF if you were to embark on one of these transformative journeys.

MORE ABOUT THE CWFF
The overall aim of this initiative is to advocate for women’s rights and gender equality, by bringing together students and professional illustrators from around the world. In modern Chinese pop culture, there are very few influential female figures to inspire the youth. Through creating this original comic series, we hope to pave the way for more female protagonists and role models, whilst exploring themes such as gender, womanhood and sexuality. We are currently in collaboration with renowned comic artists such as Fiona Staples and Liza Donnelly.

This project was initiated during the 4th Edition of the Elimination of Violence Against Women Art Exhibition (EVAW) in 2018. As women in comics are often portrayed as minor characters, female protagonists are severely underrepresented. The CWFF focuses on promoting women’s empowerment through art and culture. We strongly believe that media, such as film, literature, and illustration, can be a powerful tool in raising awareness on the issue of gender equality. Ultimately, we aim to bring about change and work toward an inclusive and gender-equal society through cultural and artistic projects, and we wish for you to take part in this journey.
