Describe art

Postby santosh11 » Mon Aug 26, 2013 9:33 pm

We can describe art in many way. There is a methodology used in the field of art history that focuses on analyzing a work of art based on its visual elements. The methodology is called formalism and it is the approach to art that stresses the significance of form over content as the source of a work's subjective appeal. A formalist analysis is used to describe the aesthetic effects created by the design, by discussing the work's formal elements. A simple step-by-step approach can be employed for writing a formal analysis, or describing a work of art.

I don't agree with that analysis at all. That misses the boat entirely. I don't disagree that much of art analysis utilizes that methodology but that is what is wrong with much of art criticism and writing about art for quite some time now.

Art is a language unto itself. To try to convey its essence with the written word is almost futile. To dissect a work of art into its formal elements can never convey its totality. It can be a part of an analysis but can never convey an accurate review.

It may take a poet to accurately describe a work of art by crafting words that capture the essence of the viewers experience.

I agree totally but there is always a certain craftsmanship involved that can make a piece aesthetically beautiful or actually portray the artist's message even further.

To a viewer, it is either a stunning show of talent, or trash (depending on taste)
To a collector, it is a treasure
To a Gallery or agent, it is potential wonder, to bring to the worlds eye.
To the religious, Art is a miracle that transcends the human talent
To an illiterate, it is language.
To the art appreciators, it is beauty, passion and emotion; captured for all time.
To the Artist, it is their expression of oneself, of their thoughts, a conveyance of their message or dreams sent into the universe with the hopes that it will survive and last the ages.
May your world be painted in the Brightest of colors!

Art is a way where an artist share his/her feelings, emotions and spread massage to everyone after creating drawing. Drawing also enhance the imagination power and way of thinking any real or non real object.

Outwardly, I see 'Art' as a form of emotional communication. It is a 'Tool', which is used (or misused) by the 'Artist'. I see it's function as, the ability to strike at a "deeper level", often bypassing the more "logical/conventional" forms of reasoning.

Inwardly, I see art as a light which shines brightest in the dark.
The fate of men, might weigh on me,
But I take that sin quite well,
Only cold wins, in the dark it seems,
But I hear there's warmth in hell...

Art is subjective. There are those that hold it to a certain standard, and that is fine. It keeps in line with the need for definitions. However, everything is relative from one kind of art to another and in describing something as art, someone else might hold the opinion that it is not even art.

The actual definition of art has changed through the ages and continues to change. The same is true of its purpose. It is fun to ponder, but it is not a thing to be nailed down as a unanimous
yes it is
VS
no it's not
kind of thing.

Well, It,s uh. Let me get back to yu on that one.
Perfection is what drives an artist.
The inability to achieve perfection is what creates a work of art.
