1st Abstract attempt

Postby tintefaust » Tue Nov 27, 2007 1:05 pm

This is called Book of the Dead, and is my 1st go at abstract art. My intention was to create a spooky and disturbing image that appears to be bound flesh. It is oil on canvas, 11x14 each. I would be grateful for any input or critique. Thanks for taking a look.

It's a great start, nicely painted, beautiful colour scheme, but I don't find it disturbing. I can't read the words but they look good.

Disturbing would be perfectly justified for this one. :) Why is the book a curved shape?

I curved it to make it a bit more surreal and confusing. I also read a comment on someone else's painting that nature and life tend to have curved lines while objects tend to be linear. I wanted this to appear a little alive and seething, and to make the viewer apprenhensive yet compelled.

Like the Pharoah said in 'The Mummy Returns', Death is only a Beginning.
The writhing orange effect and the words show that even with death, there is life. I really like this one. E

I think it is a little disturbing..but in an abstract kind of way :) The curved lines made it look to me like a human chest....and it does look like flesh. I think you have pulled your image together rather well. The words are a great finish.
DRAW~ even if no one else understands why~ PAINT~ even if no one believes in you
CREATE~ Lose yourself in your own world ~ Just do it because you love it!

BOK OF THE DEAD

Postby IRMA BACKELANT » Tue Dec 11, 2007 12:33 pm

GREAT FIRST ATTEMPT
A SUGGESTION: IF THE CURVATURE IS TO REPRESENT A HUMAN BODY - WHICH IS WHERE I THINK YOU WERE GOING, THEN MAKE THE"RIBS" MORE PREDOMINATE,WITH THE WORDS SUPERIMPOSED OVER THEM TO ACCENTUATE THE BOOK AND THE SKELETON . PERHAPS THE BINDER INSTEAD OF A STRAIGHT LINE, TRY A JAGGED PIECE OF LEATHER OR SOMETHING ORGANIC TO LOOK ANCIENT, THICKER POAINT TO CREATE A MORE 3 DIMENSIONAL EFFECT. COLORS WERE NICE, CONCEPT GOOD, END RESULT , WHILE INTERPRETIVE, STILL A LITTLE UNCLEAR.
YOUR'E GETTING CLOSE. KEEP UP GOOD WORK.
IRMA
PS I ALWAYS TYPE IN CAPS- NOT "YELLING" AT YOU.
