Thanks, that does help a bit. I have tried both techniques that you have suggested but I'm not satisfied with the result. Is there any tricks or method that you would suggest?

Dead layer

I would really like to know the purpose and the proper technique for the dead layer of paint on a portrait. I have played around with it using Flake white paint but I can't accomplish what I have read about the dead layer. Does any one know?
