The Low Winter SunDog

by rnc450
This is a rare phenomenon that occurs during sub-zero weather. It was -16 the morning this picture was taken. In short the Suns Rays shine thru ice crystals during very cold weather causing some kind of weird refraction of the sun's light to appear on both sides of the actual sun.

Another term used is Mock Sun although I'm not certain how the term Sundog came into play but I thought Sundog sounded better.

Thanks Jenn like E said the universe sends us those rare photo opportunities sometimes. I hope I don't see another one for a long time I'm not fond of -16 degree weather.

Lol, I think that's how it works, sometimes. The Universe sends a lucky shot, every now and then!

Thanks E considering this picture was taken by a camera phone at 8am on my way home from work and it was another blind shot ( couldn't look directly at the sun ) I held up the camera facing the sun and hoped for the best.
