Illinois State Bird (Northern Cardinal) and Flower (common violet)

by EngineerToArtist
Illinois school children selected the cardinal as the State Bird of Illinois, made official in 1929 by the Illinois General Assembly. The cardinal is the state bird of seven states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. In 1907 Illinois schoolchildren voted to select the violet as the state flower. The incentive for adopting state flowers was inspired during the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. Illinois was the first of 4 states to adopt the common violet.
