Scarlet Rue

by gustavoramosart
The composition in “Scarlet Rue” was in part influenced by Rothko, in a similar attempt to evoke emotion through vibrant spaces and edges. But in contrast, a narrative is intended to emerge first in the quiet and conflicted gaze of the figure. "Scarlet Rue" also draws inspiration from the metaphysical works of Morandi and de Chirico, with its sharp contrasts and vaguely mysterious quality. The horizon line behind the figure, for instance, was placed in an ambiguous manner to produce a sense of dislocation in space and time. The figure’s apparel keeps the painting rooted in familiar 21st century.
