Hello from Tennessee

I'm a new member and am enjoying the site, so I thought I would introduce myself. My name is Janie Fox and two months ago at 57 years old, I began painting portraits in oils. I entered three of my portraits in the monthly contest.

My current work in progress is of a husband and wife commissioned for a memorial gift. I've only been working on it for a week so it is still rough.

Welcome to ASC and portrait painting. I think some of the best advice I got when I first started was from a song: " The grates weren't great because at birth they could paint, the greats were great because they painted a lot". The more you do the better you get and your best lessons will come from your biggest failure.

Thanks Leslie. Painting a lot is exactly what I've been doing. I knew absolutely nothing about oil painting when I started, but have learned enough by watch videos to complete eight portrait paintings in two months, including a dog and a cat.

My kids surprised me on Mother's Day with a gift card for oil painting techniques classes at the local art museum, along with a very nice wooden artist easel, oil paints, supplies and books.
