Hello all,

I am an illustrator.
I use a mechanical pencil.
I want to (finally) get out in the art world and share my work with other artists.
I am looking to get involved in art festivals and perhaps a few competitions.
I havent been motivated to do much with with my artwork until now.

I hope you enjoy my work!

you guys are really nice here! THank you! I joined a handful of forums recently and everywhere else, people are telling me that my art is boring and beginner, because I draw from photos.

I think your art is wonderful. Some people have a real problem with people who succeed when they "break the art rules," such as "don't draw/paint from photos." Who cares if you use photos? You talent is obvious in all of these pieces.
The only critique I can think of giving is that the background of the tooth piece looks a bit flat. Perhaps that is due to the lighting of the photo, though.

I think you're doing well. If you want to experiment you can always ask a friend or someone to pose for you for a few minutes every day so you can draw from a living model. Or use a mirror and draw yourself. I don't think that is necessary, though, but drawing from a live person does excersize your abilities in different ways. :)

I'd surely like to know the twits who called
you art 'boring'. I'd kick their -sses!
Sorry Joe, I'm trying to be nice on your
lovely forum but I can't believe that anyone
would disparage these pieces in any way.
BTW, who is the guitar player?

The guitar player is Seymour Duncan. He makes guitar pickups now. Thanks for the kind words!

Hi, I'm new here, but just wanted to tell you that your drawing ability is great.

I especially love the dog. Here's why: 1. The photo was obviously taken in natural light, not a flash. This gives a more natural look to the subject and doesn't have the flatness you get with flash photography. 2. The drawing is done loosely and freely, without too much detail, and it gives a feeling of the dog's personality! The style is also just fun to look at.

If you look at the ones done from flash photos, you can see the flat effect they have. Light from overhead, behind, or side gives much more interesting shadows and form.

Just my opinion, keep looking and see if you agree.

First, my opinion on photo-realism- its possibly one of the most challenging of art forms. Everyone knows how real life looks, and how a photograph can represent reality. A photo can have artistic flaws, to much flash, double images, odd composition, ect. To truely recreate an image like this as a drawing requires faithfulness to the original photo and an acceptance of these flaws in your drawings or using your artistic right to change the image in your drawing of it. For example the first image of the boy, the flash in the photo dissolves many of the features in the face- and I love that you chose to replicate this. Everyone has taken a photo with this problem and still the love of the subject will keep the image dear to the photographer, perhaps it resonates within as a reminder that life itself is imperfect. The back ground of an image can change the feeling dramatically, don't forget to take as much time on it as you do the focus of the image. Softer or harder mediums can help with this, also blending for shadows without leaving stroke marks can be facilitated. I think you have a wonderful vision, and time can only enhance your ability. My advice- try drawing an image under a time limit- let go of the one perfect line and see what happens. Also take a look at the work of Norman Rockwell, his images of everyday life in America were the first thing that popped into my head when I saw your art. Step out of your comfort zone and what you learn will enhance your work! Good luck and keep drawing, your artistic muscle will grow with practice!

Heather, that is quite helpful! To Subanot, I agree with
Heather - Work that magic, the same magic you use on your
main subject, with those Backgrounds. You've started off
beautifully with the Seymore Duncan background, and of
course, Duncan looks fab. I love the white-out 'in the
glare', feel'! The background is very imaginative - like he's
in the digestive system of a large Dragon or some reptile,
yet in need of some 'polish' - a lil' more detail, perhaps -
you know what to do.
Again, the wood kitchen panels in the Tooth drawing are
realistic - great texture but no shading or contrast. Under
the Mom's hand there is a box resting on a counter in the
back but the box looks very close-up as if it's being smooshed
directly under her hand. Ya know, little things but all in all
not that much of a biggie and in some instances, kind of fun!
Your images Rock. Keep it up, we're ready for New!

Wow. That's all I can say. I am so envious of you. I absolutely cannot draw what I see, especially not people. Amazing. It looks photoshopped, like an option on instagram LOL. Just wonderful.
