I don't know what to call this yet. It's a new experiment on how to combine the two media I prefer. I can't decide whether to paint the background or not either. :?

To paint or not?

Postby optionking » Thu Jan 31, 2008 5:35 pm

I think it is great as is, I think it would take away from the face. Great work, I like. :D

no, please don't paint the background. is that metal for the face? if anything i'd find a way to push the ears back a bit so they're not on the same plane with the cheekbones. but it's very cool.

Erika, you've got your creative thinking cap on!
A very nice melding of the 2 styles and I love the
patterning on his face. Oh, and don't paint
the background! The ears are ok to me because
you have that pouting under lip, so they kind
of match. E

Thank you all for your comments. Gnash, the relief is done in paper maché, and painted. I didn't know what to do with it, then I used it for a papermaking tutorial. I was surprised at the result as I wasn't expecting it to turn out this interesting. The ears can't be pushed back, and they're not level, but I'll pay more attention to them next time, because I think there will be more coming of this style.

the ears

Postby gnash » Fri Feb 01, 2008 10:36 am

hi, i didn't mean to literally push them back but change the color so they aren't as much to the front. they seem to protrude. just a suggestion. i think it's a cool piece.

i had to do a bunch of stuff for design class once and i keep it around - in case. maybe i'll come up with something this groovy.

Changing the colour it may help with the appearance of the photo, but I don't think would made a lot of difference in real life, since it's 3D. But if I make a new piece, I will keep on eye on it. Thanks for drawing my attention to it.
As for your stashed away stuff, it you're interested in this technique, you can see the whole process in the Tips and Tutorial section. I would definitely enjoy seeing what others can
ing out of this technique. 8)

This is very, very good. The face looks real good. This is art that convays a good feeling. Very clean and very well done indeed.
Perfection is what drives an artist.
The inability to achieve perfection is what creates a work of art.

Thanks, John and Ted. Yes, the mask seems to hide his/her true identity. Only if he/she opended her eyes...but he/she won't. Just keeps you guessing.
