Animal sketch...? I'll be practicing pit bulls and sort of flagellating myself
over the societal perspectives - do I want to make them appear like the cute
and cuddly 'family pet' that everyone swears they are? Or 'keep it real" on the heels
of monthly reports having to do with pit bull/child attacks?

Art is art... your practice is just that - practice.
The dog/child attack... I don't blame the breed, I blame the owners in that regard. that aside...
Look forward to seeing what you put together. :) Pits (or Staffordshires) are very cute puppies.

Good morning Jennifer. Well between you and Richard I feel I must now do one of Charlie. He is my little long hair doxie I got to replace Boris. Boris was somewhat aggressive at times and very protective. Charlie more or less rolls with the punches and only seeks being petted. Once Boris got a thought in his brain about doing something he would go back to doing it even after hours of dissuading him from it. Charlie is the same. I have never painted an animal portrait before so I think I will retreat to my grid method and move on from there. I will post my progress for others to view and maybe get a few ideas of their own. Hope to see some other artist's works here.

The beginning. I don't know how long this will take, nor do I care actually. It has begun. I think the longest I ever worked on a painting, or course off and on, was a little over seven years. It simply took me that long to solve the problems I had created for myself and to develop the skills I needed to finish it.

Moving on. This one appears to be coming in fast, but in so much a different way than I expected to do it. I expected to do my usual of the total form outline, then light shading here and there, then a little color, then form shading developing, then more color, etc. It did not go that way. This painting is just as impatient and demanding as is my dog Charlie. So, I am listening and following its orders. I am so surprised that I can almost see it finished as I started it. I will post updates as I can.

what are you doing this with? (Medium?) And, I think the grin is a doxie thing.. I had one too growing up and he would sit on his butt, upright... and grin.

Good morning Jennifer. I am using conte, sepia and charcoal pencil on canvas at the moment. May be a doxie thing. You just exactly described what and how Charlie does this behavior.

Thank you. Yes he does. He is a rescue dog, with pedigree papers believe it or not. It took him a couple of weeks to decide if he wanted to join our pack. I now do not know if I own him or he owns me. Such a delight. I may have time for one more post today before the sun fails.

Re: Practice & Post - Animals

I am done on this for the day. My mind just turned to mud. Started at seven and except for a lunch break ended at three. Guess that is long enough for today. I once read a paper on quantum mechanics. It was 14 pages long not counting the intro, the table of contents and the references. I got to page 11 and I did not even understand the English words on page 12. I saved the paper on my computer. I have read it a few more times, maybe ten or so. Same thing. Page 12 to 14 are a mystery. Hope I live long enough to finally understand those last three pages. Why share this memory? Because I can now recognize when my mind turns to mud. I will work some more on this tomorrow.

Thank you Elizabeth. He has taken over where Boris left off. It appears that I have not yet been fully trained according to Doxie criteria.
