Commission-Bear's portrait WIP

Postby BYart » Tue Jul 13, 2010 5:06 pm

Hi All,
I've recieved a commission from my recent ongoing efforts to help with Rescues! I'm excited as this may be the beginning of more local commissions!
Now, let's just hope I don't mess this up...
Black dogs are sooooo much fun... :P
My usual, now normal pastels.
this one is a 11 x 14 on Ampersand pastelbord...gosh I love this surface!
Sketch and the first lay down of underpainting. Lots to do, long way to go...already see some things that need my tweaking!
I'm going to be adding in a blurred foliage backgound as well, will start that next.

Wow, interesting Barb, I did not expect blues. I'm looking forward to see how you proceed.

 Blue is only being used as underpainting to give another dimension to the black, that along with lighter blue highlights when i near finish line should work nicely.
Just a bit more done.....again...cannot seem to get a moment to work on this.

I have made changes to Bear's ears as I had them too small.
I am awaiting input from her owner as to the BG, and her likeness.
I had originally intended to do a blurred BG, but I'm thinking it looks best w/o one, so we shall see if my client agrees.
If not, then I will suggest a blurred fall color foliage, as I want to play off her eye color, as well as keep the focus on Bear.

I've attached the client's ref.(though not the best ref., I hope I made it work :? ).
I used other photos my client sent to get the coloring more exact. Bear is 14 yrs. old, and now has some graying on her muzzle.
Thoughts as to my BG idea?
Anything you see that is off and fixable, please let me know.
colors are a bit off on this image, much
ighter and more detailed in RL.

Thanks Linda!
I just wish my camera would pick up the blues in this better, as the colors shown in the image are much deeper in the portrait.
