Cherry's portrait WIP

Postby BYart » Mon Jul 05, 2010 6:00 pm

Hi All,
As some of you already know, I have partnered with some of the Rescues in my area, trying to help them get more needy animals adopted.
This is Cherry, a VERY loving, and loveable Pitbull. She, sadly has been living at the El Paso Humane Society for the last 3 yrs.....UNTIL this last Thurs., when a wonderful couple adopted her!!!!!!!!! Cherry doesn't care much for other dogs, but people she loves! So, this wonderful couple understands that she will be their only dog and are happy she is now a member of their family.
I donate a pastel(8 x 10) to the adopter's of the shelter of the month's longest termed resident animal, this month is the Humane Society of El Paso, and the longest termed resident is/WAS Cherry!! So, I am doing the pastel as a gift from me to her new wonderful owners, to be delivered upon completion, at the Humane Society, to the new owners of this wonderful dog!
8 x 10 Pastel on Ampersand pastelbord, grey color.
I've included the ref. photo I took of her as well.
Just got the sketch done, and have done the eye, am laying in some of the color next...will update soon! Thanks for reading and looking!
CC's always welcomed!

Hello Barb,
You mentioned CC were welcomed. Here is mine.
Your reference shot is really good.
You have a great start on the very special work.
From my prospective, I do see some issues but at this point, very correctable.
The dogs face is too deep.
Check you original photo. The is all math and nothing to do with the actual painting.
Very simply, the distance between the left inside corner of the dogs nostril and the very back of the right eye should be the same as the distance between the top of the right eye socket and bottom right lower lip joule. Yours is way off, much too deep.
Also aside from the eyes and nose, the center line in the dogs forehead is also a critical area and yours seem to be a slight bit off.
This has absolutely nothing to do with me liking or not your work. I looked at this and recognized immediately something that I might be able to help you with.
Al

Thanks Al. I had noticed the muzzle being too deep and have corrected it. But more important, is the inside corner of the left eye should be in line with the top of the muzzle, which I am correcting as well.
The ear is also off, which I have corrected.
The way I work, I always correct my sketch as I get to that area, as then I can visualize where I'm off more easily...others may work differently, but this is the way it works best for me...at least at this stage in my skill developement.
Always nice to have additional sets of eyes! Thanks so much and I will update when I have the corrections completed.
I post this update, though not with the corrections completed as of yet(things I mentioned above), as I worked on this more this morning, and now have seen other areas that need tweaking.

I still think the muzzle is too deep, but I can still tweak it a bit more. :?
I changed the line of the top of muzzle and much happier with it now.
Also tweaked the ear, and the top of skull. This is a scanned image, representing the colors much better. I see I will need to darken her eye a bit as well.
Didn't get much done on it today  , will try for some more tomorrow.

Truly Beautiful!

So much expression...

I am not a great lover of dogs...I prefer cats but this is a wonderful piece.

So warm and lifelike!

Thanks Nigel!
Long way to go on this one, especially since i cannot seem to find even a minute or two uninterrupted lately. Life is hectic right now, but will get to this tonight I hope!

Thanks Erika, your encouragement means alot! :D
I still have a long way to go in this medium, but I do feel as if I'm making a bit of progress in my renderings with it!
Here's the latest, again, just got a bit more done...I must finish this tomorrow!
