Peek-a-Boo Black Bear

Postby kcortese » Tue Sep 22, 2009 11:57 am

Hi Guys!

Well, started another project today.

A little black bear peeking out of some foliage. The layout isn't completed yet need many more leaves. There will be a bunch of white daises in front of him. That will make the painting cute!

I LOVE bears!

Had to get away from horses for a while. Burnt out a little on that subject.

Will post an updated pic tomorrow.

Later.

Started shaping the leaves which is going to take some time. Have to do each one individually. Fine blending and leaf veins will be applied after it dries a little.

Didn't do anything to the bear yet, I know the nose is off but he will look nice when I'm done with him.

Nice compostion in this karen, and love the subject! Bears are such an interesting animal. I've watched many, upclose while in NM. They were 'dumpster" diving and can get quite creative to get into one.
Love how this is coming along...can't wait to see more!

Thank you Barb and Krysta

I can always count on you for encouragement.

I mixed about 9 shades of green on my palette for the leaves. I think leaves are easier to do with pastels which only takes me a few minutes.

Lets see where this one goes.

Will post another pic this evening.

Thanks for following this project.

Hi Guy!

Started the bear he still needs some work, especially the nose it looks off and I made the eyes bigger than they should be on purpose. I think he looks cute with bigger eyes. I'm going to raise the other eye
ow also. Many changes will take effect.

The leaves are going to take forever for me to paint.

Thanks for following me.

Thank you Rich for the reply to my project.

Worked on it a little today, here is an update. Still working on leaves of course. Not happy with bear nose yet, perspective still looks a little off. I'll figure it out and fix.

I removed the raised eye
ow and the change made the bear look angry. I want a cute bear, so I raised both eye
ows. Maybe some adjustments are needed to give the eye cavity more depth. Or change the angle of the
ows highest point more inward.

What do you think?

I don't know, will do something. I'll play with it tomorrow.

Not done yet.

Hi Karen!
Are you using a ref. for the bear? If so, maybe post it. Might be able to help you better.
If no ref....I took the liberty of looking at this one, similar pose though obviously a bit older bear, might be helpful.
I know you wanted to make the eyes larger than norm, and the cuteness factor is obvious! :D But, maybe changing the color around the eyes to be more uniform to the coat color? I think then the eyes, even though a bit larger will be better?
Only a suggestion as I'm sure whatever you do it will be amazing!
Leaves are looking very good!

Thank you Barb!

I have plenty of black bear reference. This one is mine and if I get stuck I'll look at a book or a pic.

I know the black bear has tiny little eyes, they are almost blind you know. They depend mostly on smell that's why they stand up and put their nose in the air. They can hear pretty good too.

I LOVE black bears and get soooo excited when I see one in the road or where ever. They don't bother anybody. I HATE when the killers come up here and shoot them! GRRRRRR! I tell hunters we don't have any in our area and to go somewhere else.

I already fixed the eye
ows which is an improvement and am working on the leaves. I don't think the eyes on this little bear are too exaggerated, I wanted him to look cute.

I'll do some more work in it in the morning and post another pic.

This mornings pic.

There isn't really any "color" around the eyes except in the
ow area which is the same shade as the rest of the face marking. Around the bottom of the eyes is black paint with gray slate showing through like the rest of the bear. Hair direction will probably change a little when I complete the final touches in this piece.

Much of the gray slate shows, the entire surface isn't covered.

Will update tomorrow.

Thanks for following and have a great Friday.

Erica,

I appreciate your comment on my work. This painting is starting to come together now.

My daughter-in-law and son are coming up this weekend. I'll ask her to
ing her good digital camera with her. Maybe we can get some clear pics and I'll post them.

A good camera is my next purchase. This one isn't working out very well.

This is coming along really well! Making the eyes bigger definitely amps up the cute factor, makes it look more like a teddy bear.
