Pastel of Bull

Hi all!!!

Haven't been here for a while, been very busy, haven't done any artwork or got into the internet either.

Well, saw this photo and feel in love with it. Had to do a pastel of it, it's coming along OK. (If I don't screw it up). Didn't spray yet, too much work to do on the mist surrounding the bull. There is a lot of work to do on all of it.

Did the two ponies over, hated that one too. Guess they look best burnt in wood. Won't show the second one, YUK!!! (Too embarrassed)

Buy the way, if I find a photo on a site and download it, do I have to get permission from the photographer to recreate it another medium? Just a thought that came into my mind. If I had a table set up selling my artwork, and the photographer sees this particular piece for sale. Can I get into trouble? Should I ask permission first?

Thanks for the reply Krysta. I like this piece, the original looks better than the scanned pic.

It's been a couple of weeks since I've been in here. Preoccupied with other things I guess.

Thank you Rich, my husband likes this one.

Now, all I have to do is find time to finish it.

Started work outside the home again, which leaves me very little time for doing artwork. I'll do a little tonight maybe.

Well, gave the bull it's first spray. Will work on it a little more another day. Not done yet, have more finishing touches to do. But not much more, or I'll overwork it like I'm famous of doing.

Calling this one finished. I'll put it in the closet with the rest of them. Who knows, maybe pull them back out 10 years from now and say, "I forgot about these".

I'm putting them in the closet for protection, just dropping a pastel can cause damage. I have a large stiff envelope in there with some other work. I have 5 pieces that have to be sent out to get mounted. I will sell them this summer when the tourist season starts. So, they won't really be in there for 10 years like my other stuff.

Karen, I would make prints of this and others with horses, etc, and set up shop at area rodeos this summer!

This looks like something the PBR would use in program art, or posters, etc.

WOW!! Just a fantastic piece!! Well done Karen!!! Love that mysterious look you gave this piece. All the colors work well together also. I would think to re-sell a rendition of someone else's work would require permission. I would suggest contacting the artist but if you're like me, you look at tons of photos and create the sketch to your liking. Therefore, unable to remember whos photo is whos...lol!! I truly have no idea but that would be my best guess.

As far as needing permission to reproduce the work, if you can find the person who created it, you should definitely get their permission before you sell it. The guy who did that blue and red Obama poster that was all over the campaign got in serious trouble for exactly that - he did an artistic rendering of a photograph someone took. If it was just a stock photo, that might be different, but I wouldn't pretend to be an expert on art law!

Thanks for the advise about asking permission. I'll try to contact the photographer about using his work. I don't want any trouble. Who knows, maybe another person who visits this site will recognize it and turn me in.

I went to a local Amish sawmill on Sunday and dug through his wood pile. I picked out some nice pieces of wood with bark. They will have to dry for a month or so before I can use them. "Bummer!"

Always have my pastels though. Don't know what I'll do next, but something will come into my mind, or I'll get an urge of some sort.

Don't know when I'll be doing any more artwork. Started a new job working during the day, not much free time to myself anymore. I'll squeeze time in someplace.

Karen, I didn't see that this was taken from a photograph in your first post. I agree with Menolly and xx
eezy regarding rights and permissions. Might be worth asking though, because all they can do is say no, or...sure...pay to use the rights....

Either way, you know.

Rich, I'm sure they will ask me to pay for the rights. Maybe it's worth it because I think this is a fantastic photo. And if I do several, they should ALL sell at the bull riding event.
