I need help - whats missing????

Postby demac » Mon Jan 05, 2009 9:33 pm

Hi

This is one of my unfinished paintings but something is missing on the ANGEL she is seeming to disappear and I am not sure where I am going wrong!!!!!

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can improve her to make her stand out equally against Death, I don't want to change the colours on her but ....help!!!

oh wait my computer was just slow, if you darker the yellow around her a bit maybe, possibly even make it slightly green it should make her pink stand out more.

I think the problem is that Death's colors are in very stark contrast, where Angel's colors are a little more subtle. You might try adding a little more dimension/shading to her torso and head, maybe make the pink a little stronger or darker - and lightening the yellow background will make her wings stand out. Or you could try making the lighter colors in Death a little darker, more shadowy, so that it doesn't pop out as much against Angel.

Life/Death

Postby Jeanette » Tue Jan 06, 2009 7:07 pm

The way I see it is that Death is more detailed, and in this case, darker, so more prominent..I agree w/ Menolly, The Angel needs to be defined, as death is, she has no face, we need to see a determination of her victory!
and I feel she may need more shading in her garb.., it's a great idea! The yin and yang of good vs evil, I like it!

I am leaving the face and hair until I am happy with rest of her as its in oils the face will be the last layer,

Andrea - No green it would look out of place with her side of the painting, as it would be the only aspect that colour. Sorry but thank you

Keep the suggestions coming please ..........

I think the color of the clouds under Death should be a little darker to give more contrast.
Maybe I am wrong, but just an impression.
Beautiful work, though :)

I think the colors of Death are fine. Whats off to me seems like the colors of Angel are wrong. Maybe a little too pale in color is you like pinks but how would it look maybe is lighter shades of blues instead? Just a suggestion and you've done a wonderful job so far!!

Like everyone else has said, you need to give our angel more shape, and a face.

I think you can maybe darken the fa
ic as it twists, you know shadows giving the twist and turn impression. This will
ing some more attention to your angel also.

I attached a quick example, red is the first pastel I piced up, use your pink shade.

Just another suggestion, hope it helps.

De's painting

AHH! You mentioned Artists block...are you possibly doing what I try NOT to do, over-think a work? Have so many images swimming about in your head, you're overwhelmed? (Been there! ) How I try to release all the Art in my head, is to do a loose work..not planned, not intended for anything but my "release" of the images in my head...
Paint, scribble, splash, whatever it takes! It works!
Or, put the work down, create a few loose paintings, (like my landscapes)
and go back to what you want to create!
The idea is "loosen up"! and don't over-think!
I hope I've helped, and didn't sound like a goof!

YES artist BLOCK ... I stupidly set myself a deadline and I got so worked up to trying to meet it that I couldn't do anything..

So rather than ruin it I have put it up on the wall and left it there until the fit hits me again, I know when to walk away.. (well sometimes...) and yes too many images in my head that I am getting bogged down with them so I am doodling and surfing on the net and relaxing the
ain and seeing where it takes me.....trying to shut up the little voice saying you have to finish it.. lol

And thanks Jeanette for the encouragement. you do not sound like a goof x

I would say darken the background around the angel, add varies shades of grey/black to define the hair and, if you want to stay with pink, use some different tones-cheek lines, under the eyes and so on.

Just a thot. ;)

Thanks for that I will.

Its not that I am into pinks it just turned out like that..lol

I was going to do her hair black but it was the issue of her disappearing that was getting me

Thank you all for your input, its greatly appreciated.
