PRO SCOOTER PAINTING

A friend has recently opened a shop for scooter riders. I am doing a large painting for the shop. The idea is to depict the spirit of a pro scooter rider.
Here are some photos of setting up the canvas, a few rough sketches for layout and lettering for business name.

Creating a frame in an already crowded studio (my lounge room).


Stretching the canvas.


Creating a font for the business name 'Pro Scooters Ballina'.


Figuring out proportional sizes of font.


Playing around with colour combinations. Decided to reverse the colours, i.e., blue background, orange font.


After about 50 thumbnail sketches, I chose idea of a pro scooter rider doing a Superman trick right across the canvas. Using the local skate park as background. Started to add scale measurements to figure so I can transfer thumbnail to canvas (2000 x 1230 mm).


Took photographs of skaye park and stitched them together for a panorama view. Made a print and started sketching again, to see what works best.


The pro scooter rider spirit will have its body form filled with symbolism.

Painted the spirit scooter rider with Titanium white, and slightly thinned with turps to help it dry quicker. I laid the canvas flat on its back to sprinkle pastel coloured glitter onto the paint. I used a tea strainer for distributing the glitter. Then I laid paper over the top and slightly patted the glitter into the paint. Later, I vacuumed around the edges, and placed the canvas back onto the easel.

The paint should be touch-dry in a few days (it's summer here). I plan to lightly brush away any loose glitter; I am hoping to have a more subtle rainbow affect.

Painted the symbolic sun, and business name with same colours.


Started to add black-blue symbols representing the spirited rider. Here, the rider is already contemplating the future of becoming a cyclist. All remaining symbols will be directly related to scooter riding and being a champion.

Then started to paint the river scene in background.

Top surface of skate park is concrete made from fine blue-metal and yellow-tan cement. Decided to use pointillism for simulating the concrete and depth of field.

Without having a direct reference, I am finding the shadowing of the curved ramps challenging. So far, I am happy with how its going. The amphitheater is also slowly coming together.
