Mural Painting

Hi,I've been hired to paint two sisters (little girls) rooms in a whimsical style. My question is: what type of paints would be best for this -i.e. flat , satin, semi-gloss ? I want it to be durable with the hand prints and such ...thanks. Mike

Mike, I think perhaps acrylic might be the way to go. Oil will ten to slow your thoughts and you will find yourseft thinking about it to much. And when you say mural that saids to me it,s going to be a large work. I think the work being of an indoor seen. I think a santin kind of finsh would befit the work. And ofcourse acrylic paint is the most durable paint thier is. Good Luck.

I have been painting murals for 15 years and the best paints are acrrylics, I also use for large areas regular latex paint/ Its cheaper and more durable. Satin or matte is fine. No top coat varnish needed.

I have done a childs room with Blues Clues and sesame street. I used latex water base paint then when I was finished I sprayed the wall with a semi gloss laquer. Ill show it to you as soon as my camera recharges.

A factor that you should carefully consider is the sheen of the paint. Sheen is the amount of light reflected off the painted surface or how much the paint shines ones it is applied. The sheen of paint determines the appearance, durability and suitability of the paint. Greater the sheen greater the enamel value which affects the strength or protective ability of the paint.


In addition, I agree with Acrylic .. They considered it to be the most durable paint.

Yes the best paint to use is acrylic. The one thing you could do is buy a "Dulux diamond white mat" paint for walls and mix all the paint with it as white. It is much more durable then just acrylic.
