I had this vision of life in the shadow of a giant toadstool. So I drew some of it out.

Wow.. this is great! I am really drawn to the whispy tendril trees like things sporatically placed. The mushroom is definitely a focal point, but your drawing really makes you look. Nice! its a Surreal-esque peice, so perspective and proportion from one object to another is subjective..IAs for critique.. the only thing I would mention is be mindful of your light source. it seems to be more accurate to the moon in the background items, whereas the foreground items, its low and forward. Just a thought.

Thanks for the thoughtful comments Jennifer. I must admit that though I was concerned with the light arrangement in the top half of the piece, in the bottom half I wanted more of a dreamscape feel where if you pause to focus on one element it disconnects a bit and becomes an individual entity within the piece. Maybe the overall light arrangement could be tweaked centrally in future work :)

fwiw, here is a blog post on my personal site that shows the WIP plus a closeup of part of the drawing. http://www.markfineart.ca/2012/01/night-toad/

You are welcome... I get that feel a bit, but even if you dont tweek this one, perhaps the examination will help you find the right look you are going for in the next peice!! :)

Your understanding of your medium, how to use the full value spectrum, and composition all are developed.
I gave you a comment about dynamic character positions and making it look less like a still life than an action scene @WC.
