Great Grandma

Postby Juliep » Tue Feb 09, 2010 1:25 pm

Hi,
I've been gone for a few weeks but I'm taking time to work on art once again.
Here's a portrait I've been working on. It's one of my Great Grandma. It's from a small 1x1 grainy fuzy scanned photo. Doing it was like a history lesson on relatives facial features. It's amazing how many of her traits have been passed down. It's charcoal on 18x24 paper. First time doing charcoal and I'm not sure if it's the kind I used or just my lack of skill but there are areas I'd like to darken up but it just doesn't seem to want to take any more. Suggestions welcome. Thanks.

I think this looks pretty darn good. I agree that there are a few areas that you may want to darken to increase the depth. Try using a different type of charcoal for the darker areas. Some charcoals are gray, while others are black.

all the best,
Joe

Hi Julie!
This is very well done! For darker charcoal, I've used the "vine' charcoal, seems to be a bit darker.
Also spraying, then adding another layer might work too!
What type of charcoal are you using?
