Very First Oil Painting of Horses Running in Water

Hi Everyone!

Well, finally calling this one done. (for now anyway)

This is the very first time I ever painted a horse. I have always done horses in pastel or charcoal. I didn't realize it would take me 6 days to complete. I never painted or drew churning water or waves before either.

Oils on gray slate, it measures 10"x11 1/2".

Someday I'll do a full size painting. Working with tiny little
ushes is tedious.

The splashing water is perfct in my eyes, and the horses are well rendered. I love the action expressed here as it makes me think of moving forward, wild and free, and loving every second of it!

Thank all of you for your kind words! It's badly needed after this crazy task. Didn't think I could pull it off. I was really worried about the water.

This one aside now.

I'm starting a new one today on dark gray slate. There will be a full moon, cloudy sky, mountain silhouettes, moon lit lake, and a black stallion standing on a rocky ledge sniffing the air. The moon light will enhance the figure of the horse.

I have to plan my lighting here. Most of the slate will show, so this one will be easy. Took it out of my head this morning and laid it out on paper. Can't wait to get started.

I don't know about "masterfully", just happened to turn out this way.

I'm glad that with all the time I put into this piece, I didn't screw up the water. Which is what was worrying me the most.

I'm working on a new moon lit painting of a wild horse. It's in Works in Progress.

I have to take a
eak from painting right now. I'm in a great deal of pain, and can't move my head right now. I also think I'm getting a migraine headache. Better stop for the day, before the headache sets in. Otherwise I'll be sick for several days.

This is why I stopped doing artwork years ago.

This is my 4th painting tinkering in oils and my very first Equine painting. I have previously done horses in pastel or charcoal never painted one before. Not so bad to handle.

I think I'm beginning to catch on with painting. I have a lot to learn and am struggling with blending to avoid the
ushstrokes showing up and looking messy.

I work very tiny, the horse I'm doing now measures 5"x6" from top of head to bottom of hooves. Someday, I'll do a full size painting.

Mini paintings are very tedious and time consuming. Sometimes I have to pull my magnifying glass over to give my old blurry eyes a rest.

The original painting has more spots in the coat pattern of the first horse that the digital camera didn't pick it up.

Sorry for the late reply, but my phones have been out since Thursday. I'm just now getting back to my replies.

I started a Nurses Aide training class, and don't know when I'll be doing another painting. When I get home, it's run, run, run and I have to study.

Perhaps next weekend I'll start another.

But, of course I'll come in here to view other artwork.

It came out beautiful Karen,

I love how the light shines in the front one's mane and the water is beautiful, and just the feel of movement. You defo need to do more!
