New to oil painting

This is a forum where you can post your art work and ask what the world thinks. I am looking for general feedback, nothing too technical. A push in the right direction would be appreciated.

New to oil painting

Postby T.Richmond » Mon Jan 28, 2013 9:07 am

Hello ASC members

I would like to start out by saying that I love creativity of all types , especialy when emotion is reflected. To be able to see what your imagination is capable of creating and the emotions that are felt.

I recently started oil painting ( about 6 months ago) just to see how far I can go with it , unfortunately I had never cared for painting during my school years so I am still learning the fundamentals. No references are used , only what is imagined through my emotions ( as strange as it sounds ) so please be gentel with the comments. I find myself attempting new techniques on a new canvas , waterfalls , cliffs , trees , rocks and so on . Alot of what you see is created purely at random with a general idea of what the image looks like.

I am not too sure what to classify my style as so maybe one of you could lol

I apologize in advance for the photo quality , but I hope to take better shots of them once my camera is fixed . There are a few other paintings that are not included here but they will be soon .

These are fantastic, especially for someone new to oils. You definitely create a mood with your paintings. I think they are wonderful.

Thank you very much , im glad you guys like them. They are in order from my first to my latest . I have had a few on display in local coffee shops but I am hoping to have 4 more done in a few months for a small gallery showing. Its funny , before this I had hated painting and never picked up a brush before haha .

People say its a natural tallent but I beleive its just good understanding .I had recently learned that my great uncle studied and painted with the Canadian Group of Seven and became a known artist. Soon I will be the last person in my family that paints, unfortunately. No preasure right ?

Tyler, I do think you have a natural talent. Sure, most people
can learn to "understand" but you have a dexterity of brushwork
and knowledge of color that is pretty darn good after only 6 months.
I think that is borne of an instinct and basic love for art.
That is what I call natural talent. Keep up the good work and personally,
'Serenity' is my fave. I adore that shoreline. Thanks, E

Very nice artworks. I really like your use of colours. My favourite, like E, is Serenity. Beautiful array of colours.

When it comes to 'pigeonholing' your work why not think of a new category? If not look at other artworks and see which pigeonhole your artwork fits into.

Excellent work for 6 months...your knowledge, skill and experience should grow with time and practice.

God bless.
