Work In Progress: Hydrangea

Work In Progress: Hydrangea Update 1 One of my favorite shrubs is the Hydrangea. They are simply gorgeous from late spring through early summer and provide color here in Florida right after the Azaleas finish blooming. They, along with Camellias and Azaleas, provide for a long season of color in the...

Re: Work In Progress: Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park

Gallery Representation – a great opportunity requires some changes. I’ve had to make some unexpected changes with regard to my art projects and the changes require that I postpone the Ruby Beach project. I recently made arrangements to display many of my paintings at a local gallery – a great arrang...

Re: Work In Progress: Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park

Work in Progress: Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park, Update 3 I came up with 3 more possible compositions – for a total of 8 for this painting. There may be more possibilities but I’m satisfied with these 8. Composition 6, a horizontal format, keeps the group of people at the lower left but adds a d...

Re: Work In Progress: Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park

Work in Progress: Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park, Update 2 Progress is slow on this project. It’s not because I’m having problems with it, though. It’s because spring is here, and the plants (and weeds) in my garden are beginning to grow. That means my painting projects will have to share time wi...

Re: Work In Progress: Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park

You make some good points, Carl. But I see that you still plan in focus points, so you still are putting in the effort to include pointers guiding viewers to where you want them to look. You're afraid of losing the spontaneity by doing too much planning. I think if the painting is planned out in the...

Re: Work In Progress: Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park

Amen to that! However, Carl, I've been doing some more digging. More things bothering me. Is a focal point necessary? I am not totally convinced it is in every instance. And there are a lot of artists who believe it ISN'T ALWAYS necessary. Sometimes the artist wants the viewer to look over the entir...

Re: Work In Progress: Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park

Since the present discussion of detail and edges rightfully belongs to a blog post, and not here on a painting update, I decided to place it on my Journal on my website. Seems I can't add photos to my blog here on ASC. Check out he second half of this discussion there. Next week I'll start posting U...

Re: Work In Progress: Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park

A Discussion on Detail Normally, I would be launching into Update 2 of my latest painting here but I wanted, instead to discuss an important crossroads I've come to in my art, a personal enlightenment or awareness of sorts that has been developing for some time. It affects directly the piece I’m cur...

Work In Progress: Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park

Work in Progress: Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park A few years ago, for our 25th anniversary, my wife and I took a trip to the northwest US and Canada – Washington state and British Columbia. The scenery is phenomenal – towering mountains, huge stands of Douglas Fir, mist enshrouded lakes of azure,...

Re: Work In Progress: Raine

Work In Progress: Raine, Update 7 Here is the completed Portrait of Raine. I made some adjustments and refinements in the painting. The area under the chin was darkened a little bit. I also made some small adjustments in the eyes, the width and size of the pupils. Small adjustments to the mouth. Als...

Re: Work In Progress: Raine

Thanks for the comments and analysis, Jenn and Carl. You are right, Carl, that I'm not yet finished and more adjustments will be made. You've given me some areas to look more carefully at and make adjustments to. I'm not so concerned by copying exactly the lighting that appears on the photo. I want ...

Re: Work In Progress: Raine

Work In Progress: Raine, Update 6 During the past week I’ve brought this portrait much closer to completion. Much of the face is finished, save for small adjustments. I also finished most of the hair, again, save for adjustments. Some of the blouse has been blocked in roughly and color has been adde...

Re: Work In Progress: Raine

Work In Progress: Raine, Update 5 Over the past week I’ve continued to refine the facial features, building up color layers. I am not pushing very hard on the pastels. Very little pressure on the pencils. Laying in the color by very gently rubbing on the color, rather than rubbing in the color. This...

Re: Work In Progress: Raine

Work In Progress: Raine, Update 4 The next step in the process is the transfer to the final paper. Rather than blacken the back of the drawing I elected to blacken one side of a separate sheet of tracing paper and use it to do the transfer. There are instances where the line work on the front side i...

Re: Work In Progress: Raine

Carl, I wanted everyone to know that I struggle with my art just like everyone else. Art can be easy sometimes but can be very hard and, at times, frustrating. We love it, enjoy it and get great satisfaction. But it can also be frustrating. We don't hear enough about that.

Re: Work In Progress: Raine

Work In Progress: Raine, Update 3 Using the guidelines as I developed them in the last Update, I was able to rough in the facial features. At first I didn’t try for detail, just to get in the general shapes within the guides that I drew in. I was careful, though, to stay within those guides. Doing t...

Re: Work In Progress: Raine

Work In Progress: Raine, Update 2 I’m a little late on this installment. Had a number of other responsibilities to take care of, and they took priority this past week. One of these responsibilities had to do with art, but from a construction point of view. I’m in the process of making changes to a s...

Work In Progress: Raine

Work in Progress: Raine, Update 1 As I mentioned at the end of the last Update, I’m inclined to do another portrait. I bought a few varieties of pastel paper over the past few months, with the intent to see how I like them for pastel portrait work. The brands I purchased were Canson mi tientes paste...

Re: Work In Progress: Peaches

Work in Progress: Peaches, Update 12 I think this painting is completed. Added the reflection at the bottom. All the same pastel colors used for the other area of the floor were used here except for the addition of CO 105. I purposely left the background area with less detail than the subject becaus...
