Thank you all for the encouraging and helpful comments. I took over a week hiatus from working on this painting, due to moving, and now I'm back into it and it feels SO good to be painting again! all the stress and nervousness of moving just drifts away.... This is the current stage but I plan on ge...

Someone on another board gave me a tip for building up highlights and shadows - to use liquitex gloss medium and varnish, mixed with paint and water, and build up thin, translucent layers of the highlight or shadow. so i tried that and i'm much happier with it. I'm not sure, might still be too dark....

I'm struggling with this painting. Having a hard time getting the skin tones right and having enough contrast without having it look blotchy.

here is the painting resized. for some reason the file is too large and i wasn't sure if i could post it any larger. but i guess i was wrong. these children are also biracial - a white mother and a black father. i think biracial kids are always so adorable :) but i need to still work on lightening t...

Children portrait - WIP

I was commissioned to do a portrait of my coworker's adorable children. Just started it tonight, you can see it progress with these three images, included with the reference image. I still can't get the skin tones right, still too dark I think. Well, luckily I can always paint over it :) . C/C welco...

My first waterfall

I am also on another site similar to this and they do projects where everyone tries to paint from the same image. This month was waterfalls, they gave us 3 source photos to choose from. I had never tried to paint a waterfall before so I enjoyed the challenge. Here is my painting. What do you think? ...

I think you're right, maybe abstract is a better term. Here is the current status of the painting. Not sure if it is done, maybe it is.

Sunrise over the water - WIP

This is the painting I am currently working on. It's based on a photograph I took in the Florida Keys. I'm having fun trying a more expressive, looser style, laying on the paint really thick. I'm going to work on the reflection, add detail everywhere, and add the silhouettes of bushes in the foregro...

I really like this, nice illustrative style. Reminds me of the whimsy of Precious Moments illustrations/figurines.

ooh I love this! I am absolutely captivated. I do some collage work myself and appreciate some modern art concepts. My eye keeps moving around the composition taking it all in. Keep it up! Fresh and unique, inspiring.

Very nice. i hadn't heard of oil pencils either, but this piece reminds me of something like a cross between a colored pencil piece and an oil pastel piece. The medium seems to work well with the subject matter, as the others said. I think it's nice to use a medium where you have to build up the lay...

I enjoy this painting. It reminds me of something I would see in a children's book, hope that does not offend. I have a degree in children's book illustration so I've studied a lot of their art. I find this painting a bit reminiscent of Tomie DePaolo's style. I agree with the comment that it looks a...

I like this. Reminds me of the old-time photo portraits that were taken of people, with a modern flair (the vivid background and juxtaposition of the keyboard). what medium is this?

thank you!

thank you for your compliments, they are quite encouraging. I asked the subject to look at the painting and she was pleased with it so I am glad of that. I think it may be done now. I added highlights and definition in the hair, tightened up the shading in the sweater, and changed some of the colors...

acrylic portrait

This is a recent portrait I painted of a close friend. I'm happy with how it turned out. It was one of those paintings that just went really quickly and easily. Only took me 4 hours to paint. I would welcome any critique.

Portrait with Ivy - work in progress

This is the acrylic painting I am currently working on. I think I need to work on the shading in the sweater, the detail in her face and hair, and defining the ivy leaves. What do you think?
