I am right handed and that all makes sense so that was cool to read. I did have trouble with right eye but his face is a little unusual to begin with, very interesting though lol.

There is definite likeness so that aspect of the portrait is great! However, I think you need to work on your shadows with the clothing. The hat and her collar look very flat, no variation in shade. I would say open up your range a bit with the shading, don't be afraid to go darker! Also, if you don't have one yet you should invest in a kneadable eraser. It will lift off graphite and allow you to make some highlights. I agree with the-magnetic-cat about needing to make the shapes rounder as wel...

first drawing of person in charcoal

i am used to graphite so this was new. i really enjoyed it though.
anyway, anyone who has experience with charcoal i would be glad to hear your opinions! or anyone's for that matter.

thank you very much!! i am self taught! i actually failed art in high school and i didn't go to college :)
i do use different leads, but not different pencils so to speak if that's what you mean? in my drawings i mostly use HB, 2B, 3B, 4B, and 5B

forgot to mention....i do use a 0.7 mechanical pencil for final touches on things like hair, eyebrows, etc.
